Meet one person who is making a BIG difference!
- One Person CAN Make a Difference!
Wangari Maathai, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize (2004)
“Born in 1940 in Kenya’s rural central highlands, she studied abroad in the United States during the civil rights struggle of the 1960s, and she was the first woman to earn a doctorate degree in East and Central Africa. Maathai then reconnected with the rural women of her childhood, helping her fellow Kenyans deal with the issues stemming from a degraded environment: lack of firewood and clean drinking water, soil erosion, government corruption and human rights abuses. Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement started out as a small grassroots group. Today individuals, organizations and reforestation advocates are planting trees throughout the world.”– SOURCE: Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai

Memories of the Little Elephant
Author and Illustrator – Nehprii Amenii
“A little girl tells her life story, and thus the story of African peoples and humanity, from where it truly begins – the beginning of time! Her memory stretches back as far as the stars, to the movement of her family across the globe, to the building of great civilizations, and onto her journey across the Atlantic. “Memories of the Little Elephant” weaves centuries of time into one seamless story and builds self-esteem through cultural identity!”
